Upper / Lower Eyes and Browlift

At Scott Harris, MD, we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional results for our patients. With a 90% satisfaction rate among those undergoing blepharoplasty or brow lift procedures, our practice emphasizes tailored solutions that consider each patient’s unique facial anatomy and aesthetic goals. While these surgeries are transformative for many, understanding their nuances and limitations is key to achieving the desired outcomes.

Brow Lift vs. Eyelid Surgery

When considering brow or eyelid surgeries, it’s important to recognize that these procedures are not interchangeable. While both aim to enhance the appearance of the eyes and forehead, their effectiveness depends on individual anatomy and the techniques employed.

For instance, some cases reveal a 20/80% improvement ratio, where the benefits predominantly stem from one procedure, like the brow lift, rather than both. A thorough assessment by Dr. Scott Harris helps determine the optimal approach, ensuring that the procedures are tailored to meet your unique needs.

Brow Lift: Elevating Aesthetic Harmony

A brow lift (or forehead lift) targets the upper face, rejuvenating the area by minimizing forehead creases, drooping brows, and frown lines. This procedure restores a youthful, refreshed appearance, particularly for patients experiencing hooding over the eyes or furrowed foreheads.

Indications:

Forehead creases

  • Drooping eyebrows

  • Hooding over the eyes

  • Furrowed foreheads and frown lines

Procedure Description:

  • Duration: 1-2 hours

  • Setting: Outpatient under general anesthesia

  • Technique: An incision is made across the top of the head (within the hairline.) The skin is lifted, and excess tissue is removed. Facial muscles may be adjusted to enhance the contour.

  • Closure: Stitches or surgical clips are used and remain in place for 7-10 days.

Recovery:

  • Mild discomfort, managed with prescribed pain medication.

  • Bruising and swelling subside within a week, aided by keeping the head elevated.

  • Initial numbness in the brow and scalp transitions to itching as nerves heal, which may last several months.

  • Resume light activities after 2-3 weeks; walking is encouraged, but avoid vigorous activities until 6 weeks post-op.

Risks/Complications (Rare):

  • Hair loss along scar edges

  • Nerve injury

  • Infection or anesthesia reactions

Preparing for Surgery:

  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and ephedrine for two weeks before and after surgery.

  • Arrange for transportation and post-surgical care for at least 24 hours.

Eyelid Surgery: Restoring Brightness to the Eyes

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, focuses on removing or redistributing fat and excess skin from the upper and lower eyelids. This procedure addresses drooping lids and a sunken or puffy appearance, delivering a more youthful and alert look.

Indications:

  • Excess fat and skin on the upper or lower eyelids

  • Sunken or tired appearance

  • Not suitable for treating crow’s feet, dark circles, or sagging eyebrows

Procedure Description:

  • Duration: 1-3 hours (upper and lower eyelids can be treated together or separately).

  • Setting: Outpatient under general anesthesia.

  • Technique: Incisions are made in natural creases for invisibility. Fat and skin are removed or repositioned, and incisions are closed with fine sutures.

Recovery:

  • Mild discomfort, managed with prescribed pain medication.

  • Swelling and bruising persist for 2-3 weeks but reduce significantly after the first week.

  • Temporary vision changes (blurring or double vision), sensitivity to light, and excessive tearing or dryness are common during the initial weeks.

  • Resume work and public activities within 7-10 days. Avoid strenuous activities for4-6 weeks.

Risks/Complications (Rare):

  • Ectropion (pulling down of the lower lid, requiring corrective surgery)

  • Infection or anesthesia reactions

Preparing for Surgery:

  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and ephedrine two weeks before and after surgery.

  • Arrange for transportation and at least 48 hours of post-surgical care.
